Smart Metering Proves WaterFurnace Geothermal Savings

Whitfield Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning has received a report from a homeowner that was converted to a geothermal heating and cooling system in September of 2008 from a traditional oil and electric system. The home is located just outside of Bancroft, ON on Baptiste Lake and is 2,800 square feet in total.

Graham “Rusty” Brown, the homeowner, has just recently gotten to one year of having the unit installed, and has been using a Smart Meter attached to the unit. A Smart Meter is able to monitor the hydro consumption in more detail than a traditional meter. Brown had the thermostat set to 20°C during the day, and set back the thermostat to 17°C between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am.  Also, when he was out of town for a period of time, the thermostat was set to 17°C, as well.

At the end of the year, he was able to conclude that the geothermal unit accounted for only 29% of his overall hydro bill. He was also able to conclude that the geothermal unit represents 75% savings over the costs of both heating oil and electric heat used to heat his home the year previous. “My wife and I are thrilled with the results. All of this just proves that there are big savings to be realized in geothermal installations” says Brown of his cost savings.

Whitfield Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning used a 5-ton Envision unit with domestic hot water on a lake loop for this installation. Brown says that when the geothermal is operating, it provides “virtually unlimited hot water, and reduces overall electricity costs by as much as 30%.”

With the government rebates available to assist in the conversion included, Brown estimates that this geothermal installation will pay for itself in approximately 6 years.  This is regardless of the fact that he had extensive duct work installed for his forced air system. “We have enjoyed a very positive experience with both Whitfield and this geoexchange technology, and would be pleased to recommend both this system and [Whitfield Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning] to anyone at all interested” says Brown about his overall experience with WaterFurnace geothermal.

Whitfield Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning has been installing WaterFurnace geothermal systems since 1989 and is located in Bancroft, ON.
